Understanding Bahrain Fort and Qal'at al-Bahrain

Qal'at al-Bahrain, also called Bahrain Fort, is an archaeological site in Karbabad on the island’s northern coast. The Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities describes the mound as the former capital of Dilmun.

The site’s 17.5 hectares contain evidence of more than 4,000 years of occupation. Excavations have revealed residential, public, commercial and military structures, offering a view of how the settlement changed over time. It joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2005.

To set the site in a wider historical context, you can pair the visit with the Bahrain National Museum’s collections and visitor planning. Bahrain Fort itself focuses on the archaeology of this particular settlement.

Walking the archaeological site

Walking the archaeological site

A long walking path encircles the archaeological site, so you can see the mound and its open-air remains on foot. Bahrain Tourism says a free audio guide is available while exploring.

Free trilingual audio guides for the archaeological site are available at the museum information desk. Free guided tours are also available, and you should book in advance. For a self-guided walk, pick up the audio guide at the museum.

From Majestic Hotel, the fort is about 18 minutes away by car. You can pair the visit with the Bahrain National Museum, whose collections offer a wider historical context.
